Knowledge
One of the principle features of the PYP is to create "opportunities for children to build meaning and refine understanding" by accessing that wealth of knowledge each learner possesses as a result of their lived experiences.
The PYP Transdisciplinary Themes were developed to ensure that our collective wealth of knowledge and experiences are not categorized and dissected for their individual merits but rather the interconnectedness amongst them as a whole. By design, the six Transdisciplinary Themes represent a wide range of global, human and skill-based areas of study. Depending on the year level, four to six Units of Inquiry (UOI) are studied over the course of a school year. Each UOI addresses a central idea which is supported by lines of inquiry that work to engage the students in their learning. The UOI's are collectively known as the Programme of Inquiry (POI).
Each PYP school has worked hard to design and implement a unique Programme of Inquiry. The POI is regularly reviewed by school staff to reflect new ideas, interests, and the changes that take place around us. No two schools have the same POI, although they may share similarities.
A Basis for Practice: The Primary Years Programme document offers a glimpse into what a PYP curriculum strives to offer its students, their families and the teachers that work within such a school.
